San Diego earthquake

A slight earthquake shook much of Southern California on Thursday, with tremors felt from Los Angeles north to the border with Mexico. No damage or injuries have been reported yet.

U.S. Geological Survey measured the earthquake to have a magnitude of 4.5 at 7:49 pm, just south of San Bernardino, about 55 miles east of Los Angeles. The USGS reported the quake to be magnitude 4.9 and 5.0.

“It was a little roll and great shock, then a kind of noise of the sonic boom,” said San Bernardino Fire supervisor Tim Franke.

Although no injuries were reported, which has shocked people throughout the region. The USGS reported that the earthquake was felt as far south as San Diego and as far north as the Palmdale area.

“Nothing happened here, with the exception of a few cans of oil,” said Socorro Ruiz, an employee at a store in San Bernardino AMPM. “We were a little afraid to go up and down the floor below us. It seems a little noise occurred in the ground. ”

The earthquake disrupted a dinner for about 120 people at a restaurant nearby Castaway, said Ignacio Coyte manager. He said he felt “a very rapid rattle, then Panic, but nobody was injured” he said – all that is left is to check the damage.

“It felt like something fell from the roof,” said Coyte.

In the south, in Orange County, a librarian – at the Public Library Yorba – Linda said he was grateful, and did not have much to clean.

“You do not even have a book drop,” said Julie Zeoli. “I just felt it for about one second.”

The quake struck 10 miles deep near the San Jacinto fault, which is part of the San Andreas Fault, said Lucy Jones seismologists from the U.S. Geological Survey. At least half a dozen small aftershocks followed, including a magnitude 3.3 which shook the area an hour later.

“It is unlikely that there will be damage, seismologists Egill Haukksson USGS said in a press conference.” The earthquake is strong enough. … People have noticed and it is hampered by the tremor, but do not expect structural damage earthquake of this size. ”

The fault cutting the San Jacinto growing city of San Bernardino, west of City Hall. The city, which houses more than 200,000 people, has about 100 Unreinforced masonry buildings that are likely to be damaged by a large earthquake, “said Jones.

The earthquake was the most moderate earthquakes to hit the region in recent months. A magnitude of 5.1 hit a sparsely populated area of the Mojave Desert in early December. In July, an earthquake of magnitude 5.4 centered on the hills east of Los Angeles and was the largest of rattle a populated area of southern California since the catastrophe of 1994 Northridge.
